About Joy

“It felt like finding the name for something I already knew.”

I didn’t discover this way of living. I grew up in it.

I was born in Calcutta and came to the United States when I was nine. In the culture I grew up in, meditation, affirmations, and quiet spiritual practice weren’t anything special. They were simply part of a healthy, everyday life. Long before I knew the word Reiki, I was living with a sense of divine awareness and energy that has stayed with me ever since.

So when my sister-in-law asked if I’d come with her to a Reiki seminar, it didn’t feel like something new. It felt like finding the name for something I already knew. I went on to train all the way to Reiki Master [with whom, where, what year].

For twenty-five years I’ve carried this practice quietly. Now, with my children grown, I finally have room to share it with you.

What is Reiki

A gentle practice, explained plainly.

Reiki is a Japanese practice that began in the early 1900s. During a session you rest on a padded table, fully clothed, while I place my hands lightly on or just above you, moving slowly from head to feet. The room is quiet. Most people simply describe it as deeply relaxing.

What it is

An hour of stillness, light touch, and focused care. Time set aside for you to rest.

What it isn’t

Medical care. I don’t diagnose or treat conditions, and Reiki doesn’t replace your doctor or therapist. It can sit comfortably alongside the care you already have.

What you need to believe

Nothing. Come rest, and see how you feel. If all you take home is an hour of real quiet, that’s still a gift.

Your first visit

What to expect, step by step

  1. Arrive and settle

We sit and talk for about ten minutes. You fill out a short intake form, tell me anything you’d like me to know, and ask any questions.

  2. Rest on the table

You lie down fully clothed, shoes off, with a blanket if you like. I work quietly with light touch, or hands just above you if you prefer.

  3. Come back slowly

Take your time getting up. Have some water, and share whatever you noticed, or nothing at all. There’s no rush.

Questions

Good questions to ask

What should I wear?

Whatever is comfortable. You stay fully clothed and only take off your shoes.

Is it like a massage?

No. There’s no rubbing or pressure. My hands rest lightly on you or just above you, and you can ask for no touch at all.

Do I have to believe in Reiki?

Not at all. Plenty of people come curious or skeptical. Just come rest, and see how you feel.

Can Reiki replace my doctor or therapist?

No. Reiki is not medical or psychological treatment. Please keep following the advice of your health care providers.

What if I fall asleep?

Many people do. That’s perfectly fine.

How do I pay?

Card or cash at your session. Online payment is coming soon.
